Last week my blog was “Begin again” and what a great week it turned out to be having taken this as my starting point?
Success conjures up so many images for each of us and with the Olympic Games about to start on our doorstep it sharpens our awareness. I would be surprised if everyone of these amazing athletes do not have an inspiring story to tell about not just focusing and taking advantage of their positive qualities but recognising and making use of their ‘defects’.
As human beings we are not perfect, it helps me to remember I am not alone. There are areas of my life I struggle with day in day out such as impatience, frustration, energy, control, motivation and procrastination yet when I look back I can see these offered me such opportunities for daily victories. Victories of learning, real self-knowledge on this path of personal growth as I just acknowledge my imperfections it all feels so much easier and fun and results happen.
Our obsession to rid ourselves of defects makes our progress feel like we are wading in mud with a pair of willies three sizes too big (there are a lot of willies out there these days to choose from).
As Byron Katie says, “when I argue with reality, it is like arguing with God and God always wins”. Your God may be your own inner wisdom or your most positive self, what you know in your heart of hearts to be true. We try to hold on to this idea that we should rid ourselves of all our imperfections, I hear it all the time “I want to be better …”. We drown our chances of success in whatever task we are working on, be that losing weight, feeling confident, overcoming our fears as all our energy is going into ‘making ourselves wrong’. Just writing it down has the energy flowing out of me.
When we simply accept the human being part of us, yes, this human experience we are having here on earth right now and that our defects are normal they lose their power over us and we can even capitalise on them. In fact when we look at them closely we even get to see that defects are actually assets which have become twisted in how we have learnt to use them. When we understand their origin and let go of any emotional attachment we begin to see how assets and defects can switch places all the time. Our stubbornness becomes our determination, our laziness becomes our downtime to relax and restore our batteries …. go on ….. write them all down and play with the idea that our assets and defects are all part of our success story.
